CASTELLINA IN CHIANTI – TUSCANY

There are many interesting places to visit near Castellina in Chianti , if you are lovers of ancient Etruscan and Roman you are in the right place: just in front of Casa Landi there is one of the biggest Etruscan tombs mound type: the necropolis of Monte Calvario

ETRUSCAN TOMB OF MONTE CALVARIO

This is a great Etruscan tomb mound type, dating from the late seventh century. BC. The structure consists of four underground tombs, with the master bedroom and lateral cells. The tomb is in rows of limestone that form the shell, and is directed exactly towards the four cardinal points. The mound has a total diameter of 53 meters, was discovered in the sixteenth century and rediscovered and excavated in 1915; inside were found decorations in iron and bronze, probably belonging to a chariot, and a lion’s head in “pietra serena” .

ACROPOLIS

Along the road that leads to San Donato in Poggio is the ancient acropolis surrounded by walls, inside an artesian well still working. The whole area is in archaeological exploration.

NECROPOLIS OF POGGINO

Along the road to Siena, turning to Fonterutoli, near Poggino, there is a small Etruscan necropolis. Here were found five Etruscan tombs dating back to the sixth century. BC. Inside were recovered materials and furnishings, now on display in the atrium of the Medieval Fortress
